Canadian Mezzo-soprano Melissa Peiou is developing an enviable reputation as a creative and imaginative young artist on the opera and concert stage. Her flexible, agile voice and detailed embodiment of her characters have led to performances that have been praised by critics and audiences alike. This past January 2018, Ms. Peiou was the winner of the Metropolitan Opera Competition in the Buffalo/Toronto District Region, and was a Metropolitan Opera Regional Finalist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In her 2017 performance of Annina in Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier with Opera by Request Toronto, Musical Toronto states: the “Baron Ochs…was well partnered by mezzo Melissa Peiou as a saucy and lively Annina” (2017). Also, in 2017, Ms. Peiou performed the title role of Bizet’s Carmen with Toronto City Opera, and Mercedes in Bizet’s Carmen with Opera York. During the 2015/2016 season, Ms. Peiou performed in Haydn’s Lord Neilson Mass in D minor (Missa in Angustiis) with The Festival Chorus of Calgary. Ms. Peiou also joined the Calgary Opera Emerging Artist Development Program where she sang Third Spirit in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, as well as Third Lady in Mozart’s The Magic Flute school tours. Melissa performed Maman, La Tasse, Un Patre, La Chatte, La Libellule, and L’Ecureuil in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges in the Christmas at the Opera concert. Ms. Peiou performed the role of Dorabella in Mozart’s Così fan tutte with Opera by Request Toronto during the 2014/2015 season. Melissa was also Nancy in Albert Herring by Benjamin Britten with the University of Toronto Opera, and with the Halifax Summer Opera, she took the role of Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare. She sang in the University of Toronto’s 1914 Christmas Truce Quartet Concert with the King Township Historical Society and The Shrine of Marylake. In 2013/2014, Melissa Peiou performed the program “Words and Music” at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre Four Seasons Centre in her 2013/2014 season. Ms. Peiou also appeared as the “lively and flirtatious” Nancy in Martha by Flotow at University of Toronto Opera in February (National Capital Opera Society, Spring 2013). Previous engagements include Gianetta in Donzietti’s L’Elisir d’amore, Ruggiero in Handel’s Alcina, and Third Wood Nymph in Dvorak’s Rusalka. Melissa Peiou completed her Bachelor of Music Education degree at the University of Western Ontario where she studied with Jackalyn Short. Melissa completed her MMus in Opera Performance at the University of Toronto Opera, where she studied with Darryl Edwards.
